You can test you drive's overall system performance by going into a console and typing in this command: hdparm -Tt /dev/hdX Replace the 'X' with a or b depending on which you want to test. Post your results here. Mine is: [root@smoker dale]# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda /dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 1436 MB in 2.00 seconds = 718.00 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 92 MB in 3.04 seconds = 30.26 MB/sec [root@smoker dale]# [/list] That's straight out of the box. They can be tweaked to. I'll post that later. What do you get?

It appears to not be installed. What distro are you using? I have never seen that before. Mine is installed by default in Mandrake 9.1. I will check Gentoo the next time I'm booted into it. Look on the CDs you installed from, it may be in there. Strange :?

Hello all,
Dalek I have a quantum bigfoot 8.0 gig. And you are right it is a turtle. It came out of my mothers compaq, she wanted something bigger so I said I will take the bigfoot. I would imagine it might have something to do with my settings or something.
Oh well I guess it works. :?

Link http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue79/punk.html Word of warning. Most new drives can handle those settings. Some drives can not though. Be careful what you change. You can lose your data or mess up your drive. Hope that helps though. may turn that turtle into a 'hare'.  Later

Hello Thanks for the link but it did not work for me . Here are the results after the tweaks: bash-2.05b# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda /dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.13 seconds =113.27 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 6.56 seconds = 9.76 MB/sec Still really slow. Well thanks for trying to help my turtle.

May be the fastest it can go. May be a mobo or hard drive or perhaps a yuky cable. Maybe you can do like me, build your own from scratch. You know what you are getting then. Later

Hi Deepthi the reason that ur system could not fing hdparm command is that it is in the directory /sbin and if u r not usin root as ur login then u may not find it. This is beacause in user accounts /sbin is not in the search directory. Try giving the whole command or login from root. Donot even take root as 'su' even then ull be needing to give the whole command

I got a new Western Digital 80GB hard drive. Here is the new readings: bash-2.05b# hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
/dev/hda: Timing buffer-cache reads: 1060 MB in 2.01 seconds = 528.23 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 130 MB in 3.03 seconds = 42.88 MB/sec bash-2.05b# Not to bad. I guess the Western Digital is faster. Later
