Most simple reason is that your file is corrupt and gone.  But we can try few things..

You may try to rename the file and removing weird characters which sometimes get into but not visible.

If you are receiving the error message: General Input/Output Error for all documents:
Rename the user OOo profile so that it will create new profile

If you receive an email with an attached .xls and receive this error in opening the .xls by double clicking the document in the mail:
Copy the .xls- document to your disk and open the file from your disk.

If you receive this error in opening the .xls by double clicking the document from disk and you verified it may be opened at MS-programs: use the MS-tool to check the file format.

Most probably file was opened with MS OFFICE and saved in it and it is caused by difference of file encryption format.

To avoid such problem in future, always have backup daily for such xls file, this is what I have suggested to many people to save their life.
