slattach command not get device under /dev/sl0

Dear Frnd
 I will trying to connect two pc via SLIP using null modem cable on linux
 I had done following command
  slattach –p slip –s 115200 /dev/ttyS0 &
 It exit after some time
 When i given following command
 ifconfig sl0 192.168.0.1 pointopoint 192.168.0.2 up
 It says device is not found
 Can anybudy tell me how to do it
