Title: What are the good books about Linux?
Post by: jtt89 on November 13, 2011, 08:52:14 AM
For beginners... I just installed Centos 6 and want to learn Linux in general, but in the end have a "small", text based (no GUI) server (PHP, MySQL etc...).

I looked at "Linux all-in-one for dummies" and "Practical guide to Linux, 2nd edition", but none of them seem to be easy to read.

There are books out there on difficult topics that are easy to read and some on topic that are easy that are hard to go through if you know what I mean...

Thanks in advance for any info.

yes. Its hard to find the books on linux which have easily understandable to users.. Comparatively, there are so many documents, pdfs and web pages that are very useful while learning about Linux operating system.

The best way to find information is to search for it.  There are also websites that are sort of like books but they tend to get out of date.  Linux is a moving target so books are sort of hard to keep up to date.  Even some man pages run a little behind at times.

If you want to know more about something, I would highly recommend this site:

http://tldp.org/ (http://tldp.org/)

It is all about Linux and how things works.  It can be a bit geeky at times.  Don't let the small home page fool you tho.  Click on this:

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html (http://tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html)

That's the howto index.  If you are new to Linux, you could be there for a good long while. Lots of things to read in there.

Hope that helps.
