I am using a Pentium III and i want to change my cpu, which is better (AMD or dual core processor) for linux operating system

There is nothing like dual core. You need to compare between AMD and INTEL. actually both are good for linux. AMD has some special set of instruction inbuilt for linux.

When you choose CPU you must consider following things:
1. Application using
2. Number of users
3. Running processes at a time.

AMD and INTEL both has multicore CPUs. You can choose any out of them. Maj When you choose CPU, You should look at L2 cache too. It will also increase the speed of processing.

Do not forget to take enough RAM. You should have enough RAM and must need minimal use of swap partition.
