Title: IP Address Conflicting in Linux & Windows
Post by: sathish on May 24, 2004, 01:57:20 PM
Hello !!

I have done Masquerading in REDHAT 9.0. We are having ISDN line for 256kbps.. and our ISP provider has given us 12 static IP's.. Now I have utilized 1 IP for the linux box eth0 - (203.129.243.22)  and clients are windows o/s.

If the give the same IP of eth0 ie., 203.129.243.22 to the windows clients it is accepting and not giving IP Conflict error of the IP ADDRESS.

How ?? is the linux box taken that static ip or its working as DHCP server.

Please let me know.

Thank you,

Sathish

Ok........  I mean eth0 - 203.129.243.22 and eth1- 192.168.1.1.

now while I configuring the windows clients as 192.168.1.2... 192.168.1.3... 192.168.1.4....... likewise i have given the IP of eth0 203.129.243.22 to one of the windows clients.

Its not given any error in windows clients for IP conflict.... ??

Man, it is quite simple, You have given public IP on your private network, as this IP is not on your  private network so it is not going to conflict. On the other hand your linux box is connected to internet , so if any computer connected directly to internet using that ip can cause conflict but that is not possible as only your ISP can assign that IP to any computer and it is not going to give same IP to two computer..
BTW. how you got ISDN 256 ? I think we have max ISDN speed of 128 and that of dual channel ?
