modem configuration on Mandrake 9.2

My problem is similar to other threads, but please bear with me.
I used "setserial" to configure my USR modem and was able to connect--once. The problem is when I attempt to go through the setserial procedure again, everything is fine, except when I use the ln command.  The OS states "file exists" and I cannot connect.  Please help with how I can reconnect and the procedure to keep the configuration permanent.  Thank you.
