Hi. I inherited a linux system which I have used solely for surfing, email and desktop games, until recently, when it wouldn't boot up into the usual login screen. Now messages appear: "Failed to start the X server...", "Fatal server error: could not open default cursor font." Eventually, (still in the black screen) it asks for username, password, and then root@localhost #. This is where I am stuck. I have tried many words and numbers, but none work. Can you please help me? I would be most grateful.

Please post your PC specification and your distribution.
also, what happens when you type in startx after you login?

Either fonts are missing or it is looking at wrong place. You may try to reinstall font package.

startx left the screen still asking for the [root@localhost ˜]#.
The PC is HP8000. Is this the distribution?:
X Window System Version 7.0.0 Redhat Fedora
