Title: problem in adding users

hi linux grp....
   i am trying to add users in my [redhat 9linux]  based server.but it is giving an error like "USERADD:UNABLE TO LOCK PASSWORD FILE"

thus pls tell me what shall i do to add users in my server

This type of error also came to me, but i don't remember  exactly what I did to resolve this....

May be its permission problem

or check the pid in each lock files i.e passwd.lock & kill  that pid , After that may be it will work but not sure, may be others can help u better

Hi !!!


I think password file is locked just try this command to unclock

chattr -i /etc/passwd


Let me know it worked or not ??

Are you using command prompt
 or using
 redhat-config-users
