31  Network Troublshooting / General Networking Support in Linux / Re: Mail Sending Problem from remote client on: September 03, 2007, 03:21:53 PM

After doing a lot of "googling" i have come to know that this can be done by enabling SMTP-AUTH in Postfix.

Again some people say it needs SASL , some say that it can be done with Dovecot .

Can some one throw some light on which approach is better and step by step configuration of the same ?

32  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Re: Frequent SAMBA Problem on: August 26, 2007, 10:50:45 AM

This happens from Linux machines only. Strange part is that these windows machines appear in "browsing" but their contents can not be accessed.
Other windows machines on the same network can see and access resources on this windows machine when linux boxes can not.

I have tried a lot but have not been successful !

If it is working --for days together it will work okay. But if it goes "out of order" then by no  means it can be made operational.
Is really becoming a mystery .

34  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Frequent SAMBA Problem on: August 20, 2007, 01:20:24 PM

Dear all,

Hello !  I am facing one problem as:-

My network has a mixture of windows and samba machines. Many-a-times linux machines stop accessing windows machines--consequently linux machines can not share data with windows machines and also the printing from linux machines stops as printers are installed on windows machines ( because of  USB laser printers not performing well on linux).

This happens randomly -- other windows machines are still able to see/print from "print server" machine.
Although these machines are visible in browsing but their resources can not be accessed from linux machines.

Linux is CentOS 4.4 and windows is XP professional. Samba version is 3.0.

Can some one help in resolving the problem ?

36  Others / Miscellaneous / Strange Messages During Boot on: August 17, 2007, 04:21:44 PM

Hi!

I am facing a very strange problem -- Till a few days back my server ( Cent OS 4.4) was working okay .
It was upgraded to CentOS 4.5 through yum. After that when ever some one tries to log into the server, following messages appear ( although user gets logged in and is able to work on the server):

Keymap 0 : Permission denied
Keymap 1 : Permission denied
Keymap 2: Permission denied
KDSKBENT: Operation not permitted
loadkeys:could not deallocate keymap 3

Can any one explain why these messages appear ? What has gone wrong with the system ?

thanks in advance

39  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Re: Problems In Retrieving Mail After Upgrade on: August 12, 2007, 01:48:38 PM

Hi !

It was indeed a problem of PATH. I had to explicitly define the command in /etc/rc.local as:

fetchmail -d 900 -f /root/.fetchmailrc

and this sorted out both the issues.

But as you mentioned about fetchmail logs ---- where to find that ? I could not locate in the system although fetchmail is running properly. ( I looked in /var/log/  directory but there in nothing called fetchmail ).
Can you please suggest where is this particular log so that the same can be referred to in case required ?

Thanks anyway !

40  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Problems In Retrieving Mail After Upgrade on: August 09, 2007, 01:49:55 PM
Dear All,

I am facing problem in retrieving mails of my office colleagues:

We had a working setup of : Postfix with Clam AV and amavisd-new running on Fedora Core 2. It has been running beautifully over last more than two and half years without a problem.

With increase in activities, we upgraded the server hardware and OS. The new machine is IBM x100 server. The OS has been CentOS 4.4. The problems now being faced are:-

1. If we put fetchmail command i.e. fetchmail -d 900 at the end of /etc/rc.local file, the system gives following error during bootup:

fetchmail: no mail servers have been specified.

Whereas the .fetchmailrc  file is the same ( has been copied  from old fedora core 2 server).

The same command, if run from command line starts the fetchmail in daemon mode properly.

2.  Even if we start fetchmail from command line, it proceeds a few steps and apparently hangs after displaying following error:-

 fetchmail: smtp listener protocol error

Can some one help in solving these problems ?

Thanks In Advance

41  Network Troublshooting / Linux Proxy Server Support / Re: Estimation Of Hardware In Squid on: July 17, 2007, 07:45:22 AM
There is a very important parameter in /etc/squid.conf file called cache_dir which gives the details of the size of cache on hard disk and first and second level directories.

Is there any method/algorithm to decide upon the number of first and second level directories ?
Let us say if I have to use 10 GB of hard disk space for caching purpose, how to calculate the number of first and second level directories ?

44  Linux Software / Linux Installation Support / Error During Boot MP-BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC on: July 14, 2007, 01:36:40 PM
Dear all,

Hello !  I am facing an error ( which I am not able to understand) with my recent installation of CentOS 4.4 on IBM x3800 server.Whenever the system boots, it displays error:
Summit chipset - Could not find valid CBAR value
MP-BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC.

Otherwise the system is working okay and apperantly does not seem to have a operational problem.
Still the error is displayed every time the server boots. Can some one explain what is this error and how to correct it ?

45  Others / Miscellaneous / Unwanted Icons Appearing on Desktop on: July 14, 2007, 06:45:53 AM

Dear All,

I am facing a strange problem. For any filesystem that is not of ext3 type, the mount point of the same keeps appearing on my desktop.
Initially I had 6 filesystems of ext3 type and things were normal. I created another filesystem of ext2 type . It is mounting properly and working okay -- the only issue is that the mount point is appearing on the desktop which in any case needs to be avoided.

I tried installing the entire OS by creating ext2 filesystem during initial install but the results are same.

How can we avoid such icons appearing on the desktops ?
