2  Hardware Troubleshooting in Linux / Other Devices / SCSI Smart Array on: July 26, 2004, 05:29:39 AM
Before I installed the redhat 9 in our server, I removed the 2nd hard disk on the bay. It used to served as a mirror (RAID 0+1) when we were using windows NT 4. I removed it because I was afraid to commit mistake and thought that it would be safer if I install Redhat 9 without the mirror hard disk and in case the setup was not successful, I still have the second hard disk that will definitely run whenever I inserted it.

I was successful on installing Redhat 9 and now that server run as a File Server and working properly with the first hard disk inserted on the first bay.

My problem now is how to put the 2nd hard disk that will serve as a mirror of the 1st hard disk.

I'm using ML370 G2 server and it has a smart array 431 controller.

Please help.

I had setup NIS and Samba PDC and working properly. Now that I have set it up, I'd like to have another machine as a backup, where users can still log in just in case the Samba PDC got a problem. Is there any documentation/procedure how to put up NIS/SAMBA BDC ?

I tried setting up NIS slave but it didn't work properly.

5  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / primary gid of user [user1] is not a Domain group on: May 21, 2004, 09:39:12 PM
Im not using LDAP, Im using samba alone as PDC.

I resolved the problem, to solve this error you should map the unix/linux group of the users to domain group as ntgroup using the net command.

13  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Is NT RAS = PPP Dial-in server ? on: April 23, 2004, 11:08:58 PM
We used to have a RAS before in windows NT where users can dial-in, log in to the network and do anything (even surf the net) as if they were inside the office.

Now that we migrated our whole system to linux, Im not really sure what to setup (or rather what to do) to do the same thing as RAS did before.

Is Windows NT RAS = PPP Dial-in server in Linux ?

Here are what i like to happen :

Users can connect to our workplace by connecting to a modem connected to our logon server as if he is inside our workplace.

Users must be authenticated first by our samba logon server.

Users must be able to surf the internet and download their emails through our proxy server.

Some users will only be allowed via the callback. That means, after a successfull logon to the authenticatio server, they will be dropped and the server will call them to their designated telephone number.

Not all users will be allowed to connect via dial-in, only selected users will be allowed. The server will dropped the user immediately if they are not allowed to use to dial-in.
---

Are these things possible in linux ? We were able to setup these things in Windows NT, I hope linux can do it also.

Thank you very much in advance.

Simply. you don't need a caching nameserver !! y ? b'coz squid do internal caching for DNS ..

thanks! Smiley

I will not conflict..
BTW.. for what purpose you have set DNS on ur first machine.. is it for local domain resolving ?

yes, I setup the first machine for local domain resolving. because if i didn't set it up like that, client can't determine the netbios name of other computers in our local network.

Thanks. Smiley
15  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Confused about DNS Server on: April 23, 2004, 02:02:42 AM
we have 3 servers all running RedHat 9:

1st is for authentication (samba), DHCP, NIS and DNS
2nd is for File server (samba)
3rd for squid proxy

1st and 2nd server is not allowed to connect to the internet. So the entries inside the DNS zone are the names of our computers in the network.

I read about the caching nameserver only and it seems that it will help a lot on load of the squid proxy.

my questions are :

If I setup and configure named in our squid proxy server (3rd server), will it conflict with our 1st server ?

If I setup and configure named in our squid proxy server, will it help us to browse the internet faster ?

can I remove the named.ca on the 1st server because it always broadcast and ask who got the ip addresses inside of named.ca

Thank you very much in advance.
