3  Network Troublshooting / General Networking Support in Linux / Locking Down my System on: May 28, 2004, 03:33:45 AM
I am not able to tell you the ports that are open at the present moment. I can however tell you that port 5000 was open I think.
4  Network Troublshooting / General Networking Support in Linux / Locking Down my System on: May 28, 2004, 02:03:20 AM
I have recently gone from using a Netgear WebSafe Router to using a Linux Proxy Server and Firewall to share the internet on my home network. I made the change because I found out that there was numerous ports open on the Router.

Now that I have successfully set up the Firewall and Proxy server, I have found out that there is still a few ports open that technically should not be because I didn't open them up.

There is a few rules on iptables that allow traffic on port 80 etc, but after that all traffic is denied on the external network. All traffic is allowed on the internal network.

Any help would be good.
5  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / linux sendmail on: May 28, 2004, 01:49:04 AM
That seems like a good way to do it. It beats trying to write a script. While on the topic of sendmail, how do you append text to all outgoing emails.

An example would be Hotmail - they add advertisements on the bottom of each email you send from their services. I was wondering is it possible to do this myself on Sendmail?
6  Network Troublshooting / General Networking Support in Linux / Blocking of websites for clients on: May 28, 2004, 01:41:13 AM
I use DansGuardian for my filtering. It is very good.
(www.dansguardian.org) and is pretty simple to configure using a downloadable webmin module.

7  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Majordomo List Manager ???? on: May 27, 2004, 11:41:13 PM
Hi,
I have heard of the majodomo mailing list server or whatever it is. I was wondering what does it do and how do I configure it to work.

My server is also running apache, sendmail, ts2 server, and webmin.

Thanks,

What did you do to make it work?
9  Others / Miscellaneous / I forgot my root password on: May 15, 2004, 03:02:22 AM
is the username root or a normal user.

If it is a normal user do the following:

1. Log on as root.
2. type 'passwd <username>'
3. Follow the prompts.

OR:

1. Start up by typing 'linux single' at the boot prompt
2. At the command prompt, type 'passwd <username>'
3. Follow the prompts
4. Reboot the computer normally.

Cheers,
10  Network Troublshooting / Linux Servers Support / Problems with sending outgoing mail on sendmail on: February 01, 2004, 09:15:19 PM
Hi Again,
I fixed one problem. I had everything working for a while and then when I rebooted the server I could not recieve incoming mail. I suspect the error is the following:

Thanks,

It is set to automatically start on boot. It might be a problem with permissions in the mail queue.

Thanks

Sendmail is running but as you said before the permissions are wrong or something. I will keep working on it though. I do the sendmail stuff as a weekend thing or during my spare time. Thanks a lot though.

A while back now I set my brother up with RedHat 9 as well because he was always complaining about windows freezing when he was doing his school work (so was I sometimes). I could use his computer as a reference on what the permissions and original configuration is. Then I will set it back to normal and try again.

If you find anything tell me though - I hate starting from scratch even though it's probably the quickist way to fix software problems. Cheesy
13  Hardware Troubleshooting in Linux / Other Devices / Mounting usb devices on: January 19, 2004, 07:04:34 PM
I can't exactly do it atm because my new computer I would normally use for linux doesn't turn on and it is the only one that has usb / linux. I should have it going today / tomorrow (Tuesday/Wednesday). I will look then. My old pc has been converted to a RH9 server and is working like a dream compared to my old Windows server!

And how would I boot off it?
14  Others / Miscellaneous / Re: on: January 19, 2004, 06:59:41 PM
Hmm. I will have a look in my big linux book for Turbo Linux server - that's were I got the change root password thing from. Smiley

Are you able to log in as root even? You might of got the password or username wrong when you first made the user. I have done that a couple of times during installation because of my quick typing errors.

No Problems,
15  Hardware Troubleshooting in Linux / Other Devices / How do I mount a USB Device (eg Flash Stick) on Linux? on: January 19, 2004, 05:36:55 AM
I purchased a usb flash stick a couple of months ago and I am wondering how to mount them as a drive on RedHat Linux 9. Previously I have only been able to mount the disk on windows or mac.

And just out of curosity is possible and how would I boot off the disk?

Any comments / ideas?
