3  Network Troublshooting / Linux Proxy Server Support / Caching slow when Offline in Dial up connection on: October 26, 2006, 11:30:12 PM
Hi,

I followed the instructions given in that link...
But unfortunaltey It does not seem to work ...
It made no diffrence whatsoever...

I really Do not think one needs to use squidclient for offline caching...
I had used squid for same Purpose wherein I did not make any changes in default squid config file ( but that was a year ago when I was Working on Linux Platform I do not remember exact steps)... It just used to work fine..But that was not a dial up connection..
But in my Machine It is just not happening...It takes 5 minutes to get a static web page with very few images in it from Cache !...

Will Building The Latest Stable of Squid from Its Source Help???

Pls let me know what exaclty this error message means??

I downloaded avi files from google Media Files
the Caffene player is able to paly only audio from this avi file and not video No error Meesges Thrown Huh

5  Network Troublshooting / Linux Proxy Server Support / Caching slow when Offline in Dial up connection on: October 25, 2006, 09:21:34 AM
Hi
I use a Dialup connection in my PC  and I use Squid proxy Server..
When I hang up my dial up connection and try to access the earlier page it takes more than 3 minutes to get that page from Cache...
I know Squid is the Fastest Cache ever Built ...
Please Let me kno what changes need to be done in
/etc/squid/quid.conf
so that It fetches fast from Cache when I am offline

I have seen that squid fetches fast from Cache in such situations i
However I do not understand Why it is not happening here

OS : Suse Linux 9.2 / squid stable 2.5
6  Hardware Troubleshooting in Linux / Linux Audio Support / Configuring Sound card in Suse Linux 9.2 on: April 16, 2006, 09:04:44 AM
Hi

After Playing a lot with settings in KMixer finally I was able to get sound... Shocked

I think in the Suse Users guide this clearly needs to be mentioned as a
newbie would not be having an idea as to what is going wrong ....

I think basically the Kmixer or any sound mixer remaining mute by default
would give anybody impression that sound system itself is not working

As even with Yast the Test sound button would also not work
beause it has to do with Kmixer or any other sound mixer being used...

This clearly needs to mentioned ..... in user guides
7  Hardware Troubleshooting in Linux / Linux Audio Support / Configuring Sound card in Suse Linux 9.2 on: April 06, 2006, 08:37:58 AM
Yes
I configured the sound card via YAst

But still It is not working yast auto detected the sound card

But when I go to test the same I find it is still not working
and when I open my XMMS player and click on play button I see the progress button ..but  No sound.....

Is it because VIA sound cards are not supported by SuSe
how do go about trouble shooting

9  Linux Software / Linux Installation Support / install RHEL 3.0 WS on VIA C3 processor on: March 05, 2006, 07:37:33 AM
Hi

I made a few changes in the list of bootup services and removed on boot services  especially I removed powersaved, and hwscand from list of bootup services with insserv -r servicename

Now after this I get pleasant result from Suse and it shows the correct values for processor speed etc....

Even I can run GUI applictions and my PC does not hang and it works well even with openoffice applications...

Could you explain the significance of powersaved service and without this service running would there be any bad effect on hardware ..?

btw ..Till now it is working fine...
10  Linux Distribution / Distribution Specific / Linux distro to run on VIA C3 processor on: February 23, 2006, 07:00:36 AM
Hi

Sorry for reposting this topic again
I found that this area would be appropriate than installation support area

I would like to know which linux distro would be best to run on a VIA cpu arch

when I asked the support guys at VIA forum they told me that
VIA Cyrix 3 arch are genrally undersupported for box type linux distros like RadHat or Suse but I could try with distros like Ubuntu or Slackware that generally do not have device driver related issues;

So has any one run any Linux Distro on  a VIA C3 cpu arch with best performance..?

Also These distros like Ubuntu or Slackware support dual boot partitioning as in case with RedHat or Suse??

Please let me know ASAP..
JON
11  Linux Software / Linux Installation Support / install RHEL 3.0 WS on VIA C3 processor on: February 23, 2006, 04:36:10 AM
I got to know from VIA forum that their architectures are generally under rated for linux systems...... Sad

Now they also recommend using linux distro's like Ubuntu or Slackware
instead of "box" type ditros's like Redhat or Suse or Mandrake.....

But I am not very sure about these disrtibutions

Any one using these type of distributions share their experiences please

also mention along with it the cpu arch used for best performance;;
12  Linux Software / Linux Installation Support / install RHEL 3.0 WS on VIA C3 processor on: February 21, 2006, 09:41:01 AM
Hi

I want to upgrade my RAM but I have still one doubt left…:?

Even when I stopped xdm with /etc/init.d/xdm stop...
And no X applications or any GUI based applications are ruining and
I start working in Linux command line then too the PC hangs within
Some 10-15 minutes....

I can work even in command or shell only for maximum of 15 minutes..

I even asked the VIA support forum they suggested some tweaks in CMOS
Setup
Which did not work and finally they blamed Suse for not having proper kernel support...

I was amused to find in Red Hat web site that VIA Cyrix 3 arch was supported but any way at least RHEL 3.0 is not supported

My friends suggested that Mandrake or Mandriva is  also having  issues with device drivers....

Is this a Linux device driver related issue?

Because at least in command line mode it is not supposed to hang when I have altogether stopped all major services(GUI) that are not being used...

Please give me some explanation as to why this happens...
13  Linux Software / Linux Installation Support / install RHEL 3.0 WS on VIA C3 processor on: February 17, 2006, 04:21:07 AM
Hi
Thanks again
Yes
I installed SUSE 9.2 on my machine with dual boot option
Indeed it was very much easy than I thought Smiley
I have one more question
I want to run KDE and Gnome environmnet on it
I have 256MB of RAM
And I found that whenver i start kde applications my pc simply hangs  Sad
What is the minimum amount of RAM required to Run KDE or GNOME applications ?
and also
with cat /proc/cpuinfo shows my processor speed as 398MHZ
whereas it is actullay 796 MHz VIA C3 processor
What could be the reason ...?

BTW I have no problems  in running windows XP with this dual boot setup ..

I am at present I am using it only on shell prompt for the moment
and with top -d 1 it show the load avg at aroung 1.5 initailly and after some time it comes back to 0.10 But still whever I start any GUI application it hangs immediately and  I need to reboot it again

Did I go anywhere wrong while setting partitions or is this because I selected too many Desktop applications while installing ?

I gave 1GB swap partition and I have 256MB RAM and /boot partition with
150MB Is there anything wrong with it?

15  Linux Software / Linux Installation Support / install RHEL 3.0 WS on VIA C3 processor on: February 13, 2006, 11:25:05 PM
Hi

Thanks very much for your reply,

But I need a good suggestion  from you

Since I need to make dual boot partition , Without disturbing Windows XP Proff SP2 , I thouhght RedHat is the best option

I need tio install Linux on my PC with dual boot option ....., but since becuase of this problem with RHEL, it seems
I cannot go with it on my processor architecture....

Can I go for distributions below FC2 like FC1 or RH9.0 etc.. ?

Or Can I go with Suse distribution ..

But I have no idea regarding Suse installer will make dual boot partions as
simple as in case with RedHat distros

Would you let me know what options I can go for as far as Linux distributions are concerned
