Sound Card
Please run # sndconfig after logging in as root in a terminal. It will detect ur soundcard internal/pci and play a test sound. This is the last resort that can make a sound card work
Modem
If its an external modem, then you can directly use kppp and select /dev/ttyS0 as the modem device.
However if you have an internal modem, then you have to install separate rpms for that. try searching google for winmodems.

You can try xine or mplayer for playing music or video in redhat 8. The default cdplayer is not good enough.

If its an external modem then you shouldn't have any problem. For internal modem its a little tricky... I'll post the detailed steps in some time.
