SuSE 9.1 & my DSL hookup????
« on: May 25, 2004, 04:30:21 PM »
I have just installed Suse 9.1 (succesfully) and it recognizes my ethernet card but doesn't see my DSL modem. I've tried to configure it thru Yast but I am a complete noob (blank slate) to (SuSE) Linux. If anyone could help me so I could set up my internet as I am an internet freak and I need to run Yast update. In XP I had the following info I had to set up my connection with:
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
DNS Primary
DNS Alternate
Since I am a noobie I also am not extremely confident with running command lines and all that stuff.
Please help!

it's ethernet thru a lynksys card.
WHat does static IP mean? I don't think I have a static IP.
I tried ifconfig last night but it just spits out general info.

How is Mandrake with setting up internet access? I may just try it instead. Why doesn't Suse have a ui that you can set up access like windoze? Thanks for any help in advance.

I thing you not yet heard YAST2 .. it is utility configure your SUSe from GUI..  I am assuming that your ISP uses DHCP to give network connectivity.. so. it is like this..
1. From the task bar or an xterm start up yast2.
2. Select "Yast2 modules".
3. Select "Network/Basic".
4. Select "Network card configuration".
5. Under the "Already Configured" panel click on the Edit button.
6. Highlight the ethernet device (probably eth0) and click on the Edit button.
7. On the Network Address setup screen click on the Automatic address setup (via DHCP) button.
and set it to use dhcp and click FINISH.
