Black Screen with only mouse pointer

Hi,
I am using RHEL 5.2 server 64 bit, the screen is black with only mouse pointer visible when I log in as a user, but when I log in as a root, I dont see any problem. And after this problem appears, when I restart the system and log in again as user it is normal.

This problem I see is quite intermittent in nature.

Can anyone shed some light on the possible reason for this type of problem.

You can start by reading the /var/log/messages and then followed by Xserver logs....
