DNS Server Configuration in EL 5
« on: October 07, 2010, 03:03:16 PM »
Hi

This is my first post in this forum, but I am the regular visitor and got lot of valuable help for linux server handling from here.

I am facing a problem - we are hosting a live mail server at our premises. Scenario is like this - internal ip assigned to the server 192.168.0.254. Obviously having an public ip (static ip) with registered domain name, which carries the MX entry and proper Reverse DNS with ISP. In addition, since we have users more than 254, another ip-range was introduced of  say 192.168.1.xxx.

The mail server is accessible from outside thru net-client with address say mail.myoffice.org.

To server has ideally 2 n/w cards - 1 for public ip and another for internal-ip 192.168.0.254. Internally, we can access the mail server - without internet facility, with its internal ip i.e. 192.168.0.254. After we added the another range of ip 192.168.1.xxx, we just created an alias to the network card hosting the ip 192.168.0.254. The alias is 192.168.1.254. It works for accessing but certain utilities the later ip-range users can not use are they are bound only to a single ip.

I seek your valuable help here - how all the internal network users, without having internet connectivity, can access the their mail accounts thru mail client - mail.myoffice.org.

How DNS can be configured to divert all requests made internally to mail.myoffice.org so that all the utilities can be bound only to that address and will be available to all.

In short, all three different ip ranges should be redirected to mail.myoffice.org.
192.168.0.xxx  , 192.168.1.xxx and public ip .

We are using 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 5)
(2.6.9-55.0.2.ELsmp (brewbuilder@hs20-bc1-5.build.redhat.com) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-8)))

Will wait for your help
