Wat do think of this statement?

Do u agree that Portforwarding == Tunneling?

Hey I think its different,

portforwarding means to forward a request from one port to another and tunneling is like a secure traffic route...

Hi

Have u clicked to link tunneling there?
It seems like tunneling is like VPN means in VPN we use a secure tunnel, and there (the link u provided to me), portforwarding is sometimes reffred as Tunneling but not always but in which situations it behave like tunnels still not so clear

I agree with u on this mate.

Wat i believe is the use of the term tunneling. It's slightly ambiguous.

This could be a reason why admins don't use this term but used portforwarding instead.

The worst part is, when user experience is very towards the application, it's very biased towards that application for that particular term

Imagine:

Iptables - Port Forwarding

SSH - Port Forwarding/Tunneling

So, when iptables says it's not the same...it means iptables tunneling does not exist/wrong/...., this is because, user experience is only on iptables. That's the reason

well when I thought to give my views, a new term came in the topic that is "REDIRECTION" . I saw that WiKi .. there they are using term "forwarding" for redirection. so if that is true then Redirection and forwarding is same. But if you go meaningwise then redirection is different and forwarding is different.

Forward is something .. moving forward... moving ahead.
Redirection is somethign .. giving direction, defining new direction to move into.

What I feel if you direct a request to port 80 on IP X to port 80 of IP Y then its forwarding.

But if you forward request to port 80 on IP X to port 8080 of IP Y then its forwarding + Redirecting.

Hmm.. I think it needs better defination .. better than the one given on wikipedia.

Now Tunnelling...

As name suggest, its just a passage , not really a passenger.
I get it as if we are given a path to data which is not supposed to travel through this passage but through protocol layer they are tansffered then they reach their destination where they are again asked to travel through that passage and then after coming out , get back to their original form.

I feel .. tunneling != forwarding

I agree on the idea of tunneling when it's about VPN tunneling.

Are we able to get more ideas on tunneling. Coz im thinking of:

Port Forwarding = Tunneling

The reason why i agree on the idea on top is because of SSH idea/similarity of:
SSH Port Forwarding = SSH Tunneling
--> INTERESTING 

IP X Port 80 ---> IP Y Port 80

SSH Tunneling/SSH Port Forwarding:
localhost Port 80 --> IP Y Port 80

Based on my readings and on books such as:
--> Apress.Pro.OpenSSH.Oct.2005.pdf
--> OReilly.SSH.The.Secure.Shell.The.Definitive.Guide.2nd.Edition.chm

But these are all based on SSH. Friends, do we have documents on SSH oni, i need help to get journals and whitepapers on this general term of
