I have Red Hat distribution of Linux , ver. 9, and my modem is a Genius WinModem, how can I connect to internet through Linux with that kind of WinModem. thx.

Not sure if the second one will help much.
Note, I would recommend that if you can, buy a external serial modem. They are easier to set up and work very well with Linux. If you have a laptop and can't then you are stuck with what you have.
When I say a external, that means serial not USB. I have read where some USB modems are winmodems too.

I used the above pages and followed the instructions on how to set my Lucent LT modem up... despite the fact that my kernel version is 2.4.20-6 (RH9 early version) which doesn't have a winmodem driver for the i386 platform. I had to use the one for 2.4.20-9 (or *-8 too) and then linked /dev/modem to ttyLT0 and then configured kppp to query and use it... Seems to have worked .. or else I wouldn't be on the internet writing about it (how would I log on to the internet in the first place). Just for completion, I have RedHat 9 running on an IBM i1422 Thinkpad, and Suse 9.1 on a Toshiba laptop...
On a sidenote, in the early days of my linux experience (from the time of the ancient geeks - or not so ancient depending on how you look at it) the common theme was: "WinModems are NOT and WILL NEVER be supported" ... One wonders how times change :)
