It is very easy. If you are on Redhat Linux then you can install RPM and if you are on any other distro then can also install from source.

Here download required Mysql binary etc..
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html

After that install phpmyadmin, it let  you manage database graphically and easily.

Navicat is another nice choice, which support mysql, pgsql and oracle
