I picked Mandrake but I like Gentoo most.  I picked Mandrake because it is a really great OS for someone that is new or switching from windoze.  I did the former not the latter.  I hate windoze, sorry.

I think Gentoo is really cool and fast.  Mandrake is easy to setup as long as hardware is compatable.

LFS, maybe one day soon.  That one is tough.

Later

My assessment of the common distros:

Mandrake - excellent for new starters.

SuSE - excellent for new as well as somewhat advanced users. But I don't like some of their propritory modifications to the common apps.

RedHat - very good for servers and networks. Most of the documentation available make reference to it. Almost the defacto standard. But they had always been non-considerate towards the SOHO/desktop/small users. Now they have started concentrating on the Enterprise - the money is there. Fedora project is there way of telling the world that they are connected to the Linux philosophy.

Gentoo - Excellent. Optimal installation. very fast. Requires tons of patience to build. Needs bandwidth for Net access, else you will be sitting for days, something uncommon for common Indian users. But certainly a Distro to watch out in the future.

Debian - Not for newcomers. Rock solid. True to the GNU/Linux philosophy. "Apt" alone makes it way above the rest. It means you have really graduated.

Slackware - Sticks to the old world charm. Is the most Unix-like of all. Rock solid.

Haha, i agree with nar singh :)

I used Red Hat as my first linux ( Now using Fedora)
Well, it pampers me a lot especially in console mode. Suitable for setting up servers.

Slackware is my new flavour . Well, it's very fast i can say. Few services and fast boot up time. :)
Not very suitable for beginners. I like its idea of installing package without dependencies. (*.tgz packages)

Mandrake, errr, guess i use it only for multimedia stuffs. Nothing much actually. Very suitable for those u likes to use GUIs (good for beginners)

Cant i vote more than one distros? :( I like slackware too.

I vote for RedHat (or now Fedora) or also PCQ Linux which is based on Fedora.

I can't vote for anything else, because I have never seen any other distro so far except Knoppix, Red Hat (Fedora) and PCQ Linux (based on Fedora)

I choose Mendrake I mean Mandrake. I'm not sure why being easy is a bad thing but I need to work thus the user freindlyness of Mandrake hits the spot.
However the version of Mandrake10 I have is not very stable I don't know why but 9.2 was a lot better for stablility.

One reason for going for Red Hat / Fedora is that you will find most number of books for that. They are easily available and cheap. So self-learning is easier.

I haven't yet tried my internal modem and USB Scanner with PCQ Linux (based on Fedora Core 1). External modem works fine.

I will have to see how internal modem and USB Scanner works with PCQ Linux because there have been problems with detection.

Red Hat 9 failed to recognise them. :(

dunno about internal modems but in pcqlinux usb scanner will work, though it will not autodetect it. refer howtos on usb to make ur scanner work.

i really feel redhat is better than suse( i used only redhat and suse, nothing apart from those two ). you can see some marketing stratagies in the commercial versions!! its not bad!! but still i like to use redhat and i always feel comfortable with redhat!!

out of the distros listed, suse would be my top.  a great starter distro, it was my first and i had a good experence with it.  debian also has to be at the top of my list.  although there was just something off about it i didnt like.  i have never liked red hat or fedora, i really dont know why.  but ubuntu linux, a debian based system is by far my favorite.

the .iso is a single cd which i like, its comes with some basic apps,  not 2 or 3 of the same thing.  through apt-get i have customized it to exacilty what i want.  i havnt booted into windows in over two weeks cause i like this distro so much.

My new favorite is Ubuntu! I have always liked Slackware, and it is not really too hard for newbies anymore, as long as you RTFM.  I really like SuSE, but it is a bit slow.  Gentoo rocks, if you have the patience. Mandrake/Mandriva has always seemed a little buggy to me. Redhat was my first distro, and Fedora is still pretty good. IMHO.

grml

The Geeks distro
http://grml.org

Incidentally also said to be excellent for blind users.
Live CD installs to hard disk or USB drive.
Uses Gentoo's squashfs for maximum software on one cd.
Abundant documentation and a proliferation of console tools

The best way I've seen of getting a GNU/Debian unstable installation that 'just works'.

And guys where is Arch Linux, the most customizable one.
I vote for Arch because of their rolling release, fast bug fixing and for the best wiki available on internet for any distro.
You can customize it the way you want although I won't recommend it to beginners but anyone with two months of experience with Linux can surly play with it and it is the best out there only after slackware which is my second favorite.

I would start here:

http://www.archlinux.org/ (http://www.archlinux.org/)

Have you heard of Gentoo?  It's a rolling release, fast at bug fixing and has some of the best docs and has had them from years.  Actually, Gentoo is well known for its documentation.  It also has not one but two wikis.  One is unofficial and has been around for a good long while and one is new but is the official wiki run by Gentoo folks.

I have used Gentoo, Slackware, OpenSuSE, Fedora, Red Hat Linux(Ent. Version), K/X/Ubuntu, Slax, Sabayon, Mint, Debian, Open Solaris(Not Linux though), Zenwalk, CentOS and finally settled on Arch Linux.
It has everything I need. Simplicity, stripped down size, great documentation and pre build packages (you know how much time it take to compile packages on gentoo), great community, hand edited config and everything.

I do know how long it takes to compile on Gentoo.   ;D  I been using it since about 2003.  Of course, I built a new rig tho.  I have a AMD 4 core CPU running at 3.2Ghz, 16Gbs of ram, lots of hard drive space too.  I also have a really large CPU cooler and a large case with lots of fans.

If you run Gentoo, you at least need REAL good cooling.
