Seems that you have specified wrong network setting during installation..
I am not sure but i think you should assign static address to to your network card. and also look for your /etc/hosts file and check that there should be a entry like 127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost
if not then give one..

The login u refer to is it in text mode or in GUI mode?

To the first reply i didnt set anything up cause im not on a network its just personal use.
The second reply the login is text

Do u face the flickering problem when u use the text mode environment?
Have u tried reinstalling the whole OS before?
-
the flickering will happen if during linux boot up i press I and answer no to all the options then it will load the text base login and the screen will switch on and off for a few mintues till one time it will stay on
i have reinstalled a couple of times

Ok, now it's ur video card/ monitor problem.
What does ur video card detected as in Red Hat 9?
During my early days when i use Red Hat 7.X, i do face problem in such case. Please check ur
1) Video card driver u chosen (not really the problem i suspect)
2) Ur monitor (i suspect is this the one causing the problem) - Check the refresh rate and resolution u use. Just dont fry u monitor ;)
One more thing, Red Hat doesnt like new video cards. So better get one driver from nvidia's site.

Well.. Linux is built up from ground as a multiuser environment OS. Whether you use Have network Card or not , you are on network or not but Linux operate as a network.. ie. It uses localhost to do many thing. This this is also used in windows but it is not visible to users.
Also when i was newbie. i had messed up with local host thing and was not able to boot the computer and through the interactive startup i disable few things and then was able to start computer.. though it was long time ago i don't remember that exactly what was messed..
If it is vdo problem check wht dragoncity said and tell us wht happened..

I have a Gforce 5700 ultra 128 and when i installed redhat (only OS on the comp) It must have detected the card wrong cause now its flickering like crazy wont show any video.
Reinstalling the only way?

No unless u use go to Nvidia's site to obtain the right driver.
Why not try Fedora Core 2? It's kinda nice u know. :)
I like Fedora Core 2 quite a lot.

Download the drivers form www.nvidia.com and just install it .... do remember to edit ur configurations files. the step by step instructions is in the readme...
